We spoke with Mr. Fabiani about training camp and were told that we will be there the first week of August at a highly attended night practice. We will have an exact date soon so stay tuned for that. In other news, we encourage you to check out the podcasts section on the XTRA Sports 1360AM website for some good information. You can check that out by clicking here.

Lastly, Fabiani announced that the signature gathering for the initiative to double deck the 10th Marine Terminal downtown has been approved to appear on the ballot in Novemeber.  We need people to vote in FAVOR of the double deck because one of the main things that is being proposed for the second deck is a new downtown Charger stadium. Lots of good information today so be sure to scroll down and read it all!

Tom recently received some information from Mark Fabiani, here are some of the main points from the Q&A.

Tom: I would think that the organization would have some sort of preliminary marketing plan for the 50th season even if it is over a year away.  The press release basically came out and said that the 50th season
plans are already being talked about internally.  We just want to make sure that San Diego is involved in these festivities after housing the Chargers for 49 years, regardless of progress on the stadium front this
year.

Mr. Fabiani: I think you are reading way too much into a sentence written by a reporter in the newspaper.  The 2009 season is well more than a year off. We are all focused on this season.

Tom: Does the delay of the sunrise powerlink change the Chargers plan to continue to look at the powerplant site, or do the Chargers feel like they can wait another 3 months until a decision is made?  By Mayor Cox denouncing the delay it seems like they want that powerplant out of there ASAP and want to discuss plans with the Chargers.  Has there been any recent communication with Chula Vista?

Mr. Fabiani: The delay in the PUC’s consideration of the Sunrise Powerlink is discouraging.  We have regular communications with Chula Vista, but the decision on timing of the Sunrise project is made at the state level and has nothing to do with the City of Chula Vista (the Mayor’s recent complaints — after the delay was already announced — notwithstanding).

Tom: Lastly, the Chargers acknowledged that they spoke with Ed Roski once and told him thanks, but no thanks.  Has there been any additional conversations between the two parties?

Mr. Fabiani: Dean Spanos and Ed Roski are old friends, and they speak frequently.  We have made this clear from the start.

We have been receiving some questions on the Chargers message board over the last few weeks, here are some responses to those concerns.

Where will the donations go? We have received around $1000 dollars so far from some anonymous sources which already funded our first meeting with Mr. Fabiani on June 5th (room rental, banner creation, food, binders containing articles on the SD stadium Search). By donating you will help BACSS create marketing material to be handed out at training camp and during games. Many older Charger fans  who do not want to get involved over the computer will want contact information of public officals,  Therefore, we will be creating brochures containing EVERY phone # and email of EVERY public official in Chula Vista and San Diego. They will also contain additional information on how to get in touch with local newspapers and other media sources (these things will also be available on our website). By showing public officials and the media that we care, the issue will be pushed to the forefront instead of to the back burner like it currently is. We also will be sending out the BACSS BOYS and BACSS BABES during games and we need binders for these volunteers. Inside the binders will be numerous articles about the stadium search and a place where people can sign up to be on our email list.  By getting involved they will recieve stickers, shirts, etc. Many in San Diego are not aware of the Charger issue and think that they have a lease that they must abide by until 2010, 2015, or 2020. These people are OBLIVIOUS to what is really going on and by getting them on our email list and sending them information they will hopefully be compelled to write and call public officials. We also will be having rallies at some point and we will need signs, PAC system, food, and other things to make it happen. EVERYTHING THAT IS DONATED IS SECURE AND WILL HELP IMMENSELY.

I do not want to donate to college kids. Ridiculous. Just because some of our members are college students who do college kid things does not mean we are not completely educated, talented, and dedicated individuals. We have been working daily to get this site up for YOU, THE FANS. We love every Charger fan and everything that the Charger symbol means to this city. We have taken time out of our busy schedules of work, school, and family to help start this movement. We have had multiple meetings that are extremely detailed and productive. We invite ANYONE to attend ANY meeting with us and you will see that we are serious about what we are doing.

Who is trying to chase the Chargers out of San Diego? Easily answered: Ed Roski Jr, The City of San Diego, apathetic San Diego County residents who are not getting involved and speaking out, the stalling Chula Vista City Council. They all (minus Ed Roski) need to stand together and come up with a solution now. Only the public can force these politicians and fellow citizens to get up and make something happen.

Why are some of the updates so negative? We call it like we see it. If we think some things are suspicous we will tell YOU. It is not negative it is simply the truth. Many Charger fans refuse to believe that the Chargers will move and these people are, once again, OBLIVIOUS. I have spoken with John McCann (and am again on Wednesday), I speak with Mr. Fabiani weekly, I have talked to the Port Commision and the City of Chula Vista, I am an acquaintance with a Spanos family friend (who has stopped answer my messages but that is another story for another time). All I do is put the pieces together as I see them. I think the Chargers want to stay in San Diego and have tried everything to stay here. However, I think their patience is getting short and the writing seems to be on the wall. So if some things posted seem negative it is because the situation is horrible and right now there is no positive. I was on with Hacksaw this week and he put it perfectly by saying something like “this is is perfect storm”: recession, rising steel costs, a friend of Spanos family in LA who wants to build a stadium, inept City, feet dragging in Chula Vista, the Gaylord project fiasco, and the Sunrise Powerlink issue/ south bay power plant. Look at how many issues we have to get over. IF WE DO NOT GET THE POLITICIANS TO MAKE THIS SITUATION THE #1 ISSUE WE WILL FAIL TO KEEP THE CHARGERS IN SAN DIEGO.

I want to welcome all the San Diego Charger supporters to our brand new website.  We launched this website less than a month ago so I encourage people to be patient while we get everything up and running.  Picture this as our training camp, where we work out the kinks and get ready for the real season.  We plan on having everything in top shape by mid August.  Make sure to check the website everyday for any new developments.  Once we get an email list up and running we will be able to email you a “BACSS Bulletin” when something new arises.

Our first major event will be a booth during training camp.  The exact date has not been established, but we have been promised a booth.  I want to say thank you to the San Diego Chargers for allowing us this opportunity.  The second major event will be a rally near the power plant site. This date will depend on the response we get from our day at training camp; we don’t want to host a rally if we don’t think we can put together a sizable audience.  So when the day at training camp becomes official make sure you show up and talk with us!

Our regular season really starts when the Chargers release the financial feasibility study for the bayfront site.  Mark Fabiani stated on 1360 AM a couple weeks back that we can expect the next major Charger announcement sometime in late August.  Our guess is this announcement will be the release of the feasibility study.  We are hoping this will be positive news but with the way things have been going lately… it could very well be the opposite.  The last thing the San Diego Chargers (or any professional sports team for that matter) want is a lame duck season.  Therefore, one could guess that even if the feasibility study is negative the Chargers will tell the public that they are keeping San Diego county options open (regardless of the validity of the statement).  I would not fault the Chargers organization if this were to happen because that is exactly what I would do if I ran an NFL franchise planning to move.  The only reason I mention this is because I want San Diego NFL fans to be supportive of the Chargers but at the same time be ready to read between the lines.  Of course in a perfect world the feasibility report would be positive, the EIR for the bay front master plan (includes the Gaylord project)  would be met with rave reviews (or scrapped altogether) allowing bay front development to FINALLY move forward, and the Sunrise Powerlink would be approved in 3 months allowing the power plant to be demolished.  However, the trail of articles and language surrounding this issue paints a much different picture.  The posturing by everyone involved just doesn’t smell right.

Two options will then emerge after the release of this study:

1) Site is feasible!
In this scenario, BACSS will begin a full blown campaign in Chula Vista.  This will include promotion of Charger friendly council members running for office in November, rallies and protests in front of Port building, council office, etc., promoting the Sunrise Power Link throughout the area, and making sure that Chula Vista gives their attention to the Chargers.  By building a stadium in Chula Vista, it will transform a rundown bay front into a hub for economic success, a place for major league events, and a prized jewel for America’s Finest county.  This would be the best scenario because it would mean that the Chargers believe in the proposal, therefore giving us more time.  More time allows us to create a forceful grassroots movement for both the Chargers and Charger fans.

2) Site not feasible.
In this scenario, BACSS will asses what the report REALLY says and go from there.

An article by the Bleacher Report:

Things aren’t looking too rosy for the Chargers chances of staying in San Diego. The team has the talent to win a Super Bowl tomorrow, yet they struggled to sell out playoff tickets to last year’s game. They need a larger market like LA to maximize the value inherent in this franchise.
